UK Chronology of "Operation Allied Force" March 24-27

The United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence and Foreign Commonwealth Office released the following chronology of "Operation Allied Force" March 27:

 

24 MARCH 1999 1200Z - 25 MARCH 1999 0600Z

-- Phase 1 of the Phased Air Operation commences

-- Manned air strikes began and were carried out in 3 waves.

-- All planes returned safely.

-- Military targets were struck FRY-wide.

-- HMS SPLENDID in concert with US naval forces contributed to the attack with the firing of TLAMs.

-- Emergency meeting of UNSC called at Russia's insistence.

 

25 MARCH 1999 0600Z - 26 MARCH 1999 0600Z

-- Air and sea launched assault against targets in FRY resumed. No Allied casualties reported.

-- 6 RAF GR7s launched to attacks on targets in Serbia.

-- Media representatives from NATO countries ejected from Serbia and Kosovo

-- Civil unrest in Macedonia and Bosnia aimed at NATO nations diplomatic missions including British Embassy Skopje.

-- SACEUR emphasised the unrelenting nature of the campaign unless Serbia comes back into line.

-- Russia tables draft UNSCR which demands an immediate end to NATO action.

-- Milosevic delivered a brief address on state television calling on his people to defend the country by all means. Claimed Serbian Parliament right to reject the Peace Plan.

-- Violent demonstrations at the US Embassy in Skopje. US compound breached; vehicles burnt. Embassy staff gained sanctuary in the basement until able to effect their escape. The Macedonian police authorities calmed the situation.

-- Macedonian protesters moved on to UK and German embassies (co-located in the same compound).

-- All UK embassy staff evacuated.

-- Minor civil unrest in Banja Luka in protest to NATO bombings.

 

26 MARCH 1999 0600Z - 27 MARCH 1999 0600Z

-- Air and sea assault against targets in FRY continued for a third night.

-- 2 x MiG shot down by US F15 over eastern Bosnia.

-- 2 x MIG shot down over FRY.

-- Russia tabled draft UN Security Council Resolution demanding an immediate end to NATO action. The text was put to the vote on 26 March with 12 votes against and 3 votes in favour (Russia, China and Namibia).

-- Russia suspends political contacts with NATO.

-- Western (NATO) media representatives ejected from greater Serbia as well as Kosovo.

-- British diplomatic premises in Skopje and Banja Luka severely damaged by hostile crowds.

-- VJ General Staff issued statement following NATO airstrikes which indicates that there will be no imminent change of stance from the Belgrade regime.

-- Fighting continues in northern and central areas of Kosovo including areas of Podujevo, Drenica and Decani. There is intensified fighting around Pristina.

-- Serbian artillery intervened along the Albanian border, in the area of Dobrune Pass. It is thought that there were some civilian casualties. Tension remains high.
